I have been using a plastic backplate for several years now without any problems. I have seen a plastic backplate that was broken in half when a strap caught on a boat railing as a fully equipped diver (with stages) entered the water. However, the only real problem I have seen on metal backplates is there can be rather sharp metal edges where the straps fit into the backplate. These can begin to cut into the straps. A round file and a little elbow grease will fix that. Aluminum backplates will corrode if used extensively in saltwater, but will still give years of service. Doug Chapman
