I'm not trying to start any wild rumors or anything (one reason I chose to mail to techdiver, rather than posting to rec.scuba), but I was wondering if anyone could corroborate the following. The owner of the dive shop that I trade with is friends with Sheck Exley. Today, he told me that he had received a phone call around 10:30 PM last night (Wednesday, April 6), and was told that Sheck Exley is missing and presumed dead after failing to break his own deep diving record of 880 feet on SCUBA. Sheck had reportedly been in Mexico, trying to reach 1000 feet. As I'm sure you all know, he is a very meticulous diver, and apparently had taken all the necessary precautions to set this new record (stage decompression bottles, exotic gas mixes, safety divers, etc). He apparently went down and never came back up. No trace of him or his gear has been found. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard anything about this. -JimG
