My wife and I took a resort course a year ago in Puerto Rico.  We paid 
about $90 each, and it included all equipment and 2 tanks.  We got a card 
that was good for a week that allowed us to go on supervised dives.  The 
course above sounds like a real C-Card course judging by the price.  Some 
resorts will certify you in 2 days.  8 hours classroom & 4 (or so 
dives).  This will probably suit your purposes perfectly (except that 
your father will loose two days of diving with you).  These courses, 
however, don't typically give one an in-depth training on diving.
