Rich and Jason - since it takes about two
minutes for the narcosis to develop, if you
decend faster, you will be two minutes past the
greater level of narcosis faster, thus shortening
the "frog effect" (if you put the frog in boiling
water he will hop out, if you put him in warm water
and turn on the stove he will boil). The same goes
for narcosis. Since the higher order brain functions
go first, the narcosis tells you everything is
fine to go deeper. When slammed with the reality
of the impairment all at once, the unpleasantness
of the obvious endangerment hits as quickly as the
jusgement goes, giving you the "bad trip effect". - George
