I've seen those brackets, and dive shop up here are gouging $120 for the
thingies. I certainly was not impressed by them, first and foremost by the
"nice" anodized aluminium finish (which won't stand more than a coupla
dives). Then, the mounting is not very flexible; that is, the rigidity of
the setup (a cotter pin inserted in the larger pin - parallel to the tanks
axis) is more than likely to inflict bad stress on the hose clamps that hold
the whole shebang together: watch them suddenly snap, and not while they're
sitting nicely at home. Besides, it seems that you can't even adjust the
mounting angle.
No, what I'll do is what Richard Larocque has done, that is, making a
"---\_____/---"-shaped metal bracket, which will be fastened by the ends to
the pony tank with hose clamps [with some rubber underneath - why the
rubber, Richard, for galvanic corrosion protection?, or to take the slack? -
I know it's not to protect the paint on your pony :) ]... The whole thing is
permanently mounted on the pony, and I either slide the main tank holding
strap though the center section, or make another belt with a spare tank
holding strap that I slide on top of the tank.
This way, I'm not restricted to only the two tanks that are fitted with
the female Global Mfg. brackets, and I'm also blessed with a spare tank
strap, shall it break.
I mean, it's nice to support the local dive shop, but as long as they
don't exaggerate when the gear they want to sell you is overpriced and has
much more limited usefulness than homemade stuff.
The same goes for the ankle weights that plenty of our NED gang use, made
from bicycle trips filled with leadshot, and held together by a tie-wrap
around a special round grommet (with a H-cross section). Hey, they cost less
than $8 a pair to make, and I get the old bicycle trips free from the local
bike shop. What? No quick disconnect? Well, we slide them over the feet, and
they won't come off underwater...
