Jason, Becoming a PADI Instructor is a two part process. Once enrolled in an Instructor development course (IDC), he spends about 40 hours being taught PADI philosophy, training standards, marketing, teaching format, etc. Upon completion of the IDC, he is then evaluated by an evaluator during the Intructor evaluation phase (IE) If he passes the IE, a PADI Instructor is now allowed to teach Basic openwater, Advanced openwater, andRrescue diver. Keep in mind that the ONLY experience the Instructor has in teaching any of the above comes from what he did prior to the IDC on his own, which in most cases, is nothing. You learn basically zilch about teh advanced adn rescue diver program, and are expected upon enrollment to be prepared for the "rigors" (now there is a joke) of becoming an instructor. Add to all this the fact that a newly certified PADI instructor can the very next following day after passing his IE, enroll into a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer program, and poof!, two days later you are awareded the PADI MSDT rating. Sorry, all instructors were not created equal. Raimo.
