Stuart, I took my ANDI Instructor course from your president (Ed Betts) in 1990. I also took Ed's first Tri-mix course, so this posting is VERY ACCURATE. Ed's nitrox course and Tri-mix course was nothing more than an equipment and retail sales pitch. In fact, after Ed's tri-mix lectures, I advised the students in the class that I would not be making the dives as the class did not prepare anyone for the dives. Ed did not even provide, or have, tables for the dive. We took the class, prepared to go diving the next day, and had still not ever seen a table. I told Ed, privately, in his office, that his class did not prepare any of us for the dives. I also told Ed that I was advising the others not to dive also. Part of Ed's lecture during his nitrox program was in fact stating that you could use 50/50 as a bailout even if the dive was at 130fsw because if switching to bailout, you would be on your way up. As a local competitor of Ed, I have many of his customers, as I am sure he does of mine, come in to my store. This practice of 50/50 bailout is still being taught, or somehow suggested, to his and Island Scubas students. I know, I talk with all of his students when they come to my store for a 50/50 fill and they are diving on the Oregon in 130fsw. That is not to say that all ANDI Instructors are bad - I am sure their are plenty of good ANDI instructors that teach the course properly. Raimo.
