Subject: new member, nitrox education question

I'm new to the list, so I'll give you my intro. I don't consider myself a
technical diver yet, but with a degree in physics, strong curiosity, and a
love of diving, I want to be. I'm trying to learn all I can, and I recently
found aquaCorps and subscribed, and just found this list today.

I live in Hermosa Beach, in Los Angeles, and dive the Channel Islands as much
as I can. About the only parts of my rig that you might find interesting are a
drysuit (an Oceaner, un-crushed neoprene), an OMS low-pressure 120 cuft
cylinder, and a Nemesis computer, non-Nitrox version (so far).

So as a new member, I'm looking for all good sources of information, good
books, other journals, and anything (stores, clubs, someday
divesites, whatever) in LA that I can get to.

In the near term, I have a question about nitrox and trimix. My buddy just
took an ANDI course. My schedule didn't let me at the last minute, so I missed
it. I am about to take the same course, but now I have a few questions for you
all.

Is there any reason I should get IANTD certified instead of ANDI? is there
much difference? is either better?

Is nitrox training a prerequisite for trimix? It will be a long time, I think,
before I have all the training and gear (and experience) to step up to trimix,
but if it includes nitrox as a subset, why not go directly to a trimix
certification?

fyi: I've been reading some old letters on nitrox, IANTD and ANDI, hoping to
not waste bandwith by reposting FAQs (sorry if I have), but the server's been
slow today and I don't have everything yet. I have found a few postings
discussing nitrox replacing air for standard divers. My original certification
is NASDS, and I belive they considering nitrox. I think they were also the
first agency to teach with a safe second instead of buddy breathing.

Thanks for the help and info,
