John <jheimann@sc*.gt*.co*> asks via e-mail, > I saw a posting from you on the techdiver mailing list about Dr. Dan's > deep air diving. I was wondering about a few things (you may want to > send response, if any, to techdiver@opal.com): > What decompression model/tables were used? His own, I think. NOT SURE. He mentioned the Beuchart-Pro decomp. schedule only goes to 300'+. He has been gathering his own data (from his doppler machine recordings) and developing his own decomp. schedule as he explores deeper into the unknown. > What was done to monitor & control O2 toxicity? Monitor: nothing. Nothing exists. My understanding is that the onset is sudden. I don't think he ever had such a hit. He was narc'ed a couple of times, he said, around 175', on ascent. Control: some "skip breathing" at depth, he says. The SHORTNESS of his deep dives apparently is his best odds against odds. > Did Dr. Dan believe he was > developing an tolerance to high PO2 through repeated exposure? If he did, he didn't mention it. > What regulator was used? Any redundant equipment? Poseiden (not sure which). Again, the short duration of his dives below 150 fsw, say, makes (extraordinarily) redundant equipment unnecessary or not useful. As reported, he carried a 80 cu.ft. Nitrox tank, and an 80% oxygen pony, both for emergency use at SHALLOW (above 100 fsw). BTW, if any of you have "technical" questions as in "techdiver", you may try writing Dan at his "United States Deep Diving Exploration and Survey Team" address (which is NOT his home address): 5800 Barrymore Drive Kansas City, MO 64134 FAX: (816) 763-6125 Know YOUR limits, and dive WITHIN them. :-) -- Bob.
