The fatality in the Gorgazzo Cave happened during an attempt of a
deep air
record in the cave to 95 meters by a team of 5. The guy who died was
a support
diver who was waiting at 60 meters. In 11 degres water he was with a
5 mil
wetsuit, single tank and octopus with the exit 15 minutes away !!!
Apparently the 2 divers below realized he was behaving "funny", but
when they
reached him it was too late.
Cold, dark, narrow, 60 meters on air, no backup --> stress and
narcosis -->
panic --> nobody can dive that cave anymore.
Also in the past 3 weeks 2 other fatalities in the same area. One out
of air on
a new wreck in 40 meters and one in a cave just on the border between
Italy and
Slovenia. Same as in the Gorgazzo-wetsuit, NO BCD, single tank,
octopus, air!!!
Thank god those are in Slovenia nd Croatia and the local authorities
have other
things to worry about. Till when though ?
