If the intent of the device were to minimize hoses and simplify the rig then it would be of great use (for me, anyway), particularly if gauges could be read easily in no-vis conditions. Hopefully the design of the HUD would also take the need for redundancy into account. > >There are a number of interesting technical problems to be solved: > >What are the implications for mask clearing? I agree that there are many technical problems to be solved, but your assumption that the display will be integrated into the mask may not be correct. The possibility exists for a secondary "visor" type arrangement that could be fitted into normal masks with the visor being used for the display. In any implementation, there will have to be some physical connection between the HUD and either the computer, transmitter, etc. I would hope that the design would incorporate the same things that the Cochran (sp?) and Phoenix are capable of, meaning that tank pressure, etc was also monitored. That tethering of the mask would strike me as being very useful provided that the tether was not prone to catching on anything. I also doubt that mask clearing would be impeded. I suspect that a design similar to the "dive-link" might incorporate a sonar based tranmitter as part of the mask strap, with the other end being attached to the computer(s) which is safely tucked away in the rig. > >How is a buddy supposed to monitor your dive details (particularly air >consumption)? Swap masks? I would hope that if you were diving with a buddy, that you would be capable of communicating critical information via hand signal, but there again, if you can afford a HUD, you'll probably have a comm unit as part of your rig, so you can just ask.;-) Well, so much for my 2 cents... Regards, Joe
