Steve, thank you for asking. I would be glad to discuss our
standards for equipment, experience and standards. First of all,
anyone with a good team oriented attitude can operate in our
group without regard to experience. We have more than 70
people, some of whom are open water divers, and some who don't
even dive. As far as equipment, you must know we have sponsors,
like American Underwater, and you have probably guessed that
much of what we use was built either by Bill Gavin or myself.
Otherwise, we all use just plain good, simple stuff. I personally
prefer 104's, Sea Elite 300 bar din manifold (everyone else uses
Scuba Pro yolk), Poseiden first stages, Scuba Pro G250 seconds,
custom hoses by Dive Rite (everyone else uses pret a porter),
DUI TLS 350 dry suit, Oceanic backup lights, all stainless marine
hardware and bolt snaps, Scuba Pro Jet fins, Tusa Liberator mask,
(the others use Dacor), Uvatech pressure guages, Beuchat bottom
timer, Gavin built my light, and I built my scooter. We are a
strict
buddy team outfit, we dive 1.4 ppo2 for working, 1.6 deco, 130 aed
(max). We deco using Hamilton, Decom, and I also use Abyss. The
gas divers must be in top shape (obviously), we tolerate no
substance
abuse of any kind. We have strict bottle marking rules as to the
depth the gases can be breathed at, we allow only four standard
deco gasses: air, 35%, 50% and O2. All divers must be Hogarthian
rigged.
Anyone can do anything they think they are ready for . We talk about
how
we do every little thing until it filters throught the whole group.
Some of us
work with different segments to teach them.
If you think of anything else that I didn't cover, please ask. -
George

George,
Although you surely have better things to do, some of us on the list
would enjoy and benefit reading your group's standards as regards
equipment, experience, and even preferences. Before you say it, I
understand the potential problems with simply telling people this
information. Some folks might think the information alone is
sufficiant to try extended range/tech/deep/mixed/etc diving. It does
seem to me, however, that those interested enough to keep up with a
tech list like this would have enough sense to understand training is
required.
Anyway, despite the flames (not mine, you'll note) we humble list
lurkers are interested.
