Is Finland worth putting on the "must visit" tech diving list?" We have many old (several hundret years, the oldest) wooden wrecks not found in many seas. Our waters are not deep, most of the wrecks are shallower than 60 meters (180ft) no I don't know if they are specifically tech diving sites ? If you are interested of wooden wrecks then the visit is worth doing. That's in the coast. We dive also in the lakes we have so many, but there are no wrecks, only some smaller vessels. There are also big ship wrecks but they are not different from usual wrecks found everywhere. There are few really interesting huge wrecks but diving is not allowed in those, such as m/s Estonia which sinked a year ago just in the front of our waters. It's laying in 80 meters (240ft) and took 900 lives. We do not have natural caves here, cave diving done here is done in few old mines and not comparable to real cave diving. Also, there are some limitation for foreing divers, you should have a Finnish buddy and get a permission to dive here from military officers (It's not a problem). And of course, you should be prepared to low-viz, cold and dark. Dry suits are used here. But there's one thing you might call our specialty and that is diving under ice. If you have not done that you have missed something really beautifull ! Best time to do that is in Jan-Mar (sea). The lakes are frozen from Nov to April. A ice protected regulator is needed. In case of intrest, please contact me. Our diving club has been seeking for foreing diver contacts to find out new friends and all enquiries are wellcome ! Terho
