As an aspiring (wannabe) "technical" diver, I for one really appreciate the TechDiver list and Compuserve's Technical section. I believe I have become a safer, more competent diver by learning from the correspondents on these forums. Perhaps they are only "enhancing their status" by stating their opinions and relating their experiences, but they are also exposing me to a wider variety of ideas than I would ever come across in my isolated location (Michigan's Upper Peninsula). I've learned something from nearly all of the contributors, notably Richard Pyle, John Crea, John Comly, and yes, even George Irvine (when he stops flaming long enough to share his expertise), but I have learned _nothing_ from Mr. Farb. For those of you who don't know him, Rod Farb is a highly experienced diver and underwater photographer. His highly successful expedition to the Monitor on the heels of NOAA's failed surface-supported mission a few years back demonstrated just how well free-swimming sport divers can conduct a scientific survey. His photos have appeared in National Geographic, and he has written and published books on diving. He has tons of "technical" diving experience he could share with us penilely-challenged weenies, but his contributions to the TechDiver list usually consist of echoing somebody else's entire posting and adding a smart alec remark. More's the pity. >Below a certain >length you are a weenie, above it you are a DIVER. Is that measurement taken before or after the dive? Here on Lake Superior a lot of DIVERs could lose their status. :-) >...you just need to know the jargon and how to talk about >it. Especially about light bulb output... Paul W. Smith - Thanks for the MR-16 bulb info. I regularly indulge in blatant strokery (I think that must mean home-building and experimentation) and this is useful information to me. Keep on learning. -Dan ========================================================= Daniel R.
