HEY! HEY! HOLD YOUR FIRE! HOLD YOUR FIRE! This is not taking us anywhere. I'm the one who started this (Roger), not Richard! ^^^^^ I presently making my OWN torch in order to save 600$CDN out of the 800$CDN that a similar torch (a la Dive Rite) would cost me. The reason I posted the original message is that a dive shop owner wanted to charge me 60$CDN for a MR16 light bulb from Dive Rite that is worth 8$CDN in my mind! A flag came up, and I told myself that it did not make sense. And since I was not sure about this caltalyst business I asked this list for advice... Here is a resume from the information that everyone sent me: -There is such a thing as a catalyst to "burn" H2 as it's produced and it's platinum oxyde. It comes in the form of ribbons or -Most sealed cell batteries already have this catalyst inside. This is logical if you really want to make it a closed system. -The catalyst is added for backup in case the battery's own catalyst is not enough (over charging, charging with a closed container, etc...) -Some companies even include some catalyst in the light's handle in case some H2 was to leak inside it or that a water leak and subsequent hydrolisis would occur. Now the bottom line is: 1) If I find some cheap source for the catalyst, I'll put it in. I did keep George's source in my back pocket but since he has yet to manifest himself (the source, not George), I'm sort of uneasy to ask for a freebee. 2) Since the simple design of my lamp will force me to recharge it with the battery container open anyway, I really don't beleive that it's a necessity. I'll make sure that I do it in a well ventilated place. Ha, for our american friends, since I'm not going to sell it to anyone I won't get sued :-) (I could not resist this one). Thanks for the nice information and I'll eventually make all of it and the drawings of my lamp available through my www site. And please, if you want to flame fight, do it outside of the list (there might be children reading). Asbestos underwear on.
