What most people do not realize is that this apprenticeship or "ladder" should be spread out over years of diving (several hundred dives)! You don't just wake up one morning and decide that you are going to fly an F-16 for the Thunderbirds. It is a long and thorough process where you start in a high wing single engine trainer and work your way up the ladder from there. It seems that in diving and in particular, "technical diving", most novices and even many of the instructors/agencies want to compress the tech diving learning curve into 8 hrs of classroom and 3 dives. It's not going to work. The number of accidents is going to climb until attitudes change. What to do about this situation? Well, either attitudes change or let natural selection take its course. - Tony
