This is a message from our Net-buddy Terho in Finland. I found it very interesting and worth sharing with y'all. I had joked to him that you would have to be a Brit to enjoy the cave diving environment in Germany -- but as Terho points out, it's all relative.... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 14 Aug 1995 05:27:47 GMT From:kaikuran@nm*.nm*.no*.co* To: chbrown@fr*.sc*.fs*.ed* Subject: Re: German cave diving.... Hi Chris ! Thanks for the video list. I suppose that the German environment is close or better what we have here. At least in UK the waters are much nicer. I do not remember is I have told you about the typical diving environment here, but it's like this: In the summer in the sea the temperature is around 12-20 C (53-68 F) in the topmost 9 m (10 ft) of water and below that it's always around 4-8 C (40-46 F). In winter when we go under the ice the topmost 2 m (6 ft) of water is around -1.5 - +2 C (29-36 F), that is freezing. So, the dry suit is a must, only beginners use wetsuits (we use a 7 mm (1/4") suits here). Full face masks are also popular. Visibility ? Well, the best we have here is at the outer parts of the archipelago, and is ranges around 10-25 m (30-75 ft), and the worst is total zero. Typical visibility in which we ofter dive is around 2-5 m (6-14 ft). As you can guess, we found it very funny when someone writes in a SkinDiver that they did not enjoy the dive becouse of the low 30 ft visibility ! Do you belive, we even enjoy the dives here ! We think that diving here gives a good practice to every part of the Globe, the conditions are better where-ever you go. Just visit us in the winter and we'll take you under the ice to see a real different world. Terho
