<When doing dive support at a marine biology institute, we used a clip

We've had fairly good luck making our own slates, actually. We use two
varieties. The first is a short section of white PVC pipe, with the
outside sanded down to accept pencil markings. One end has surgical tubing
arranged in a triangle through three drilled holes (about 1.5 cm from the
end) evenly distributed about the end of the pipe. The tubing keeps this
tubular slate in place on your arm.
The other slate we use is a 'loose leaf' setup, where four 15 cm by
20 cm sheets of lexan (use the 3 mm stuff; my 5 mm setup is too heavy and
bulky) are sanded down on both sides. Two holes are drilled at the top of
one of the 15 cm sides, though each a tie clip or a split key ring is
inserted. This gives you the ability to 'turn' the pages. I found that
this setup requires a fair bit of sanding, although if you have access to
an orbital sander, especially a pneumatic one, it doesn't take long at all
(use a low-numbered sandpaper though).

	Hope this helps...
