Subject: re:black diamond doubles
Can't tell you about rigging that particular BC, but here are some
general tips...
For doubles in general, steel tanks are generally preferable. Good ol' steel
"72"s are the sweetest set of doubles to use if you don't need huge air.
You are using what we refer to as "dual Independent tanks".
Tips- Mount your two guages where they are very handy and be sure to have
a foolproof way of telling which guage (cylinder pressure) goes with which
tank. If you have different gases in the tanks (not recommended if you
can help it) be Extremely careful to mark regs and guages as to which is
which and be Extremely careful about which one you are using.
Mount clips on your regs and have d-rings high on your harness so that your
regs can be quickly and easily accessed and stowed with one hand without
looking. Do not, as many pictures wrongly show, tie-wrap the clip
directly to the reg hose.Use a short piece of rubber tubing between the reg
and clip, be sure it hangs in such a way as to prevent free flows(point
mouthpiece straight back).
Since you don't have a manifold bar behind your head, you can also route
your hoses to stay clear of your head and have great freedom of head
motion.
Mount your left tank at an angle that allows you to most easily reach the
tank valve, as it is somewhat recessed.
If you cave dive, you must switch tanks a couple times during the dive to
be sure you will always have at least 2/3 (or safe reserve) accessible.
Of course, you will be doing this, anyway. The NSS Cave Diving Manual
has a good section on how to do it.
When some wise guy tries to tell you that independents are too hard to
use, remind them that monitoring guages and switching regulators are
among the most basic safety skills, you are glad you have so much
practise at doing it, and anyone who feels intimidated by doing basic
safety procedures dosen't belong in the water.
