<snip> >people who have acquired the skills and knowledge without the certificate >will escape the $$ net of the training agency. I know I know, they have >to make a living also and I have no problem with that. >r.b. Excuse me while I make a left turn on the last subject: I think a line needs to be drawn. Up to what point can we justify someones need or desire to make a living (ie, instructors, agencies, etc..) versus the safety of the students and the image of the diving community (and the repercussions of bad diver image)? PADI is BIG business. They have a long time ago chose safety standards with litigation in mind, not an individuals safety. As an instructor for them I was driven to certify as many students as possible and often encouraged to do so against my better judgement. I have friends who teach for other agencies and I have heard similar stories. My feelings are that if you are in the business of diving and can make a living you should feel very lucky, most people can't do what they love for work. On the other hand, if you can't make a living at it, don't do it or don't try to make money at the expense of safety (or by saying I need 27 different certs just to dive in salt water). Honesty and integrity are sorely missed in the recreational & technical dive communities. There are a few individuals who have the respect of us all, but their numbers are small and the rest we consider to be crooks. I don't mean to single Ronnie out, often I see the same line "they have to make a living" in other's posts. If they can't make their money honestly they should get another job (we call it work).
