All this talk of independents, left and right hand valves being reachable, and valves turning off on the ceilings of caves... My Open Circuit trimix rig used independent doubles (they had to be independent- they contained different gas mixtures). I positioned the valves so that the knobs faced forward, not to the sides. The left tank had a Sherwood Genesis DIN valve, so the regulator was mounted on the "outside". The right tank had an OMS Y-valve, also with the knob for the primary facing forward (knob for backup facing rearward). You could do it with a genesis valve on both tanks just as well. I found with the knobs facing forward I could reach them MUCH easier than when they faced sideways (without the need to loosen any harness strapps -- I could just reach back and turn them). Also, for the cave divers, you don't have to worry about rolling a valve off on the ceiling of a cave. Just my 2 cents...
