Jeff, A Y-valve has a valve mechanism between the tank and each regulator fitting. This allows you to turn off the gas supply to a free flowing regulator, to shut off the gas suppy to a blown regulator to valve oring. Essentially, the only emergencies that a Y-valve cannot handle is a blown tank neck oring or a blown burst plug or a sheared off valve limb. (ok, multiple failures where the regulator fails and its valve fails is another rare happening.) John
