   Okay, I can try to locate more details, but the sub in question was the 
"SURCOUF" (named after one of the greatest French naval mercenaries), who 
was at the time of it's launch (perhaps when it was sunk, too) indeed the 
largest sub in the world. It had a crew of over 100 men, including the pilot 
of the tiny amphibious reconnaissance airplane it carried in a huge 
watertight hangar behind the conning tower.
