Subject: Re: H-narcotic? / use of neon

A bit more info folks.........

I investigated this area some time ago in an attempt
to gain some info on neon as an alternate
diluent gas for deep mix work. The bottom line
appears to be that little research has been done. Any that
has been done has been kept fairly close to the chest of
the people doing the work. A couple of things that came from
my investigations:-

(1) Not sure about this theory about Hydrogen combusting when
exposed to 4% O2. Sure it has a large explosive range, but for
combustion to take place we need three items - fuel, oxygen and
a source of ignition. We have fuel (hydrogen), we have oxygen
but we do not have a source of ignition?.

(2) Neon seems a viable alternative (except the cost), concern
seems to be the treatment of a DCI hit in a diver that has been
using neon. Outside my knowledge here, but surely a bubble is
a bubble regardless of the gas it contains.Raising the ambient
pressure high enough should, in theory 'crush' the bubble back
into solution. The problem then would be one of a suitable
decompression protocol. Comments on solubility etc were
thrown into the arena. Anybody any hard facts?

(3) Having spoken to Jeanne-Pierre Imbert who worked for
Comex during the Hydrogen trials the following may be of interest.
The research proved the benefits of hydrogen and was succesful in
reducing HPNS effects. The downside was not the explosion risk
(since the mix contained less than 4% O2 at the 500m+ depth
of the tests) but was the curious side effects in some members
of the dive team. Whilst the narcotic effects were negligable, there
were psychotic side effects noted. This may have been a
combination of things, but it was thought more likley that this
was due to breating hydrogen at around 50 ATM.Symptoms ranged
from feeling ill at ease, to a great desire to be brought back to normal
atmospheric pressure

Comex no longer envisage the use of hydrogen.

Regards

Chris
