At the suggestion of another mix diver on this list, I thought I would amend my last posting, "Poor Man's Mix, etc." I said that bottom mix should be chosen so that PO2 at max depth is between 1.4 - 1.6 ATA, depending on exertion level and bottom time. In fact, most people now think that you should limit PO2 to 1.4 for a working dive, especially after the several O2 related fatalities last year. NOAA allows 1.6 ATAs for up to 45 min., and some still run PO2s this high for bottom mix, but most experts feel that this is too risky for technical diving, where exertion levels may be high. A PO2 of 1.6 is OK when at rest (i.e., decompressing), provided that cumulative CNS exposure is kept within accepted limits. jheimann@sc*.gt*.co*
