---I am reposting this from AOL for the author with his permission: <<I miss writing for (and reading) Underwater USA, so I thought I would post this here in case anyone is interested. . . . June 10, 1995, Shinnecock (LI), New York--Atlantic Wreck Divers Jeff Pagano, Pat Rooney, Brad Sheard and Brian Skerry were the first divers to visit what is believed to be the USS Spikefish on Capt. Ken Jastrzebski's dive boat, Jean Marie. Earlier attempts by the group to dive the site over the past four years had been impeded by bad weather and logistical problems. The wreck has been fished for a long time and was known alternately as the Baldwin (a destroyer) or the Spikefish. This dive confirms that the ship is a sub and, although no positive identification has been made, other research indicates that it is indeed the Spikefish. Holding the world record for the most dives by a submarine (more than 10,000), the Spikefish sank on August 4, 1964 sixty miles south of Montauk. However, there is little information about whether it was sunk as a target or scuttled. Sitting upright in about 260 feet of water, the sub's wooden decking is intact in many places; the ship's rounded pressure hull is revealed in other areas. The divers anchored in near one of the torpedo loading hatches and explored about one third of her length. Using mixed gas, the team made a single dive but plan to return for further exploration. copyright 1995 Theano Nikitas>>
