While driving up through the Florida Keys on Wednesday, I stopped in at the
office of Dick Rutkowski (founder of IAN(T)D) in Key Largo to worship at the
nitrox shrine. He was quite friendly, showed me around, and then showed me
something he is going to introduce at DEMA in a week or so - a nitrogen filter.
It looks like it could be the big breakthrough in nitrox commercialization.

This device is (I gather) a membrane-based system which allows O2 to diffuse
more easily than N2. It is housed in a cannister about 1m long and 10 cm wide.
As he demonstrated for me, it produces nitrox at up to 40% O2 from a simple
compressed air input. What is especially nice is that the input air doesn't
have to be oil-free or otherwise special, and since the FO2<= 0.40, nothing
has
to be cleaned. Estimated cost is around $3000.
