I think the key here is to be comfortable with the increased task loading that deep mix dives will create (lots of stages, gas switches, increased gas consumption, increased deco penalty, etc.) before doing a 250' mix dive. The old timers got this experience through deep air diving because that was the only way to explore these caves (or wrecks, or whatever). Now that training in mixed gas diving is so available, care must be taken to avoid prematurely placing a relatively inexperienced person in these situations where, for example, they haven't had the real eye opener of seeing their gas supply rapidly reduced when there is a problem at 250'.
