Harold Gartner's posting about a fatality on a seamount brings up a related topic - the victim was apparently diving air on his back and gas in a stage. I have heard of others doing this, like Sheck Exley on one of his Mante dives, and Steve Berman on a recent Doria trip. If there is anyone else who favors this approach and would care to explain the benefits, I'd like to hear them. I gather (2nd hand from Berman) that the big advantage is that you can deco on the gas on your back. Personally I see a lot of drawbacks, like having to go back on air at the worst possible time if you are deep, have a problem, start breathing fast, and run out of trimix.
