Dam (sic). i was sorry to get the news that someone fell off the matterhorn. i take special interest in the story reported by hal because aquaCORPSE will run my 3D bathymetric + story telling what a superior dive the seamount is in their next issue. When i first sent matterhorn copy to sportmagazine X, i included a lecture on how deep diving should never be popular--just possible. They promtly accepted the article and sat on it for three years. being impatient, i asked M^2 @aC if he'd publish. M^2 judged that tekkies knew which side of the hose to bite on, and suggested skipping the speech. I believe he was right, however, an incident report is not the disclaimer/appendix i had in mind. so, if you in the future have just read "IMAGER," and have checked the tdiver archives for "MATTERHORN," to find out more about this neato site, check also your reallity. Consider: *there is only one tech trainer who has (ever been to?) substantial experience on the seamount. if you don't know who i'm talking about, you need to do some more research.... * the matterhorn rises from 1kilometer deep water and is 40 km from nearest shore/ 55km from nearest harbor, tops out at 40 meters deep, slopes at vertical to 45 degrees, opposing surface and bottom currents 0 to 2+ knots ( if this were the tour de france the mountain would be: "beyond category....") *great white critters have been observed feeding on the surface there ( pull those stops....) *diving experience gained anywhere xcept on oceanic seamounts has little to do with a fun time at the site. further: (ignoring M^2's advice....) matterhorn is not about a personal depth record; it's pure survival. *george: don't worry about bill. he C'd his A (smart guy!). Check Skinny Dipper Magazine, (es-dee-em) Dec. '71. Jack McK et-al were among the first to dive the seamount and (es-dee-em) boldly told so in it's cover-story. *i'm not sure if the soul had any training--was he a "techdiver," or a diver? does it make any difference?
