The accident that occurred at Ginnie took place right beside me as we were suiting up for a dive. This is what I saw: The diver came out of the water and was coughin as he took his equipment off. When our group (Jerry Fant, Jeff Disler, Harv Thorn, and myself) inquired if he was OK he replied that he was. As his coughing increased we asked if he needed a medic which he declined. Shortly after that we decided that he did need help and Jerry ran to get an O2 bottle then went to inform Ginnie management of the problem. The management quickly called for an O2 mask and an ambulance. The DAN people (including two MD's) arrived quickly and someone made the descision for air evacuation. The victim was complaining of abdomen and lower back pain (There may have been other complaints- these are the ones I heard). The ambulance transported the diver to the helicopter landing zone where he was then flown to the hospital. A call to the hospital this morning indicated that his condition was "resolving well" but were (understandably) reluctant to give out more info. One comment from the hospital was that they were very impressed with the reaction and treatment given by the cave diving community. (I helped with stowing the divers equipment more than with his treatment so I don't really include myself in this). Other conversations going on around at the time indicated: He skipped deco, He didn't skip deco, He deco'd with Nitrox (I did carry two Nitrox bottles from the water) Basically, opinions were flying around like crazy. Jerry had his computer and said (I think) that there was 140 min total dive time, and 52 min (?) deco. George's PFO diagnosis is truly impressive! I'm sure the two DAN physicians wish they could make such accurate and confident diagnosis from a short (somewhat erroneous) message. His ability to cut through the confusion and arrive at the one true answer never ceases to amaze me! I suggest we form a new religion centered on George worship. Jeez, I've never seen anyone so badly in need of an enema.
