To Group members: Thank you for the warm response to my requests for information. I am now subscribed. To introduce myself, I am located at the University of Hawaii, currently employed as a biogeochemical oceanographer. My current research interests are on light-induced changes of organic molecules in oceanic waters, and the role of microplankton in global carbon cycling. Past research projects have ranged from fish behavioral ecology to molecular viral pathology. I received a B.A. in Zoology from Miami University, and an M.S. in Microbiology from North Carolina State. Prior to moving to Hawaii last year, I served as Assistant Program Director/Science Program Director for Newfound Harbor Marine Institute/Seacamp in the Florida Keys. My long-term interests are in tropical marine biogeography and natural history, and especially how molecular biological tools can be applied to these questions. I am an instructor with NAUI, and also teach Basic Nitrox through TDI. My experience has included some cavern and cave diving, zero visibility work, and wreck diving off NC, as well as reef diving in Florida and Hawaii. Currently, I am helping develop a bluewater diving protocol to service a bio-optical oceanographic mooring slated to be placed 60 miles north of Oahu, and am teaching advanced rescue and basic nitrox courses for University affiliates who have a need for such. While I have a strong interest in technical diving techniques as they can be applied to research project goals, I consider myself a "newbie" to much of the discipline. I look forward to the information exchange taking place here. Please feel free to contact me if my experience can be of help. Best regards, David F. Pence, NAUI 11418, TDI 297 Department of Oceanography University of Hawaii-Manoa
