Refering to the discussion on just what is a tech diving... (apologies for not remembering the source) >> There seems to be an assumption within the diving community at large, >> that "technical diving" == "very deep diving". In advanced diving >> circles, I do not believe that this is necessarily the case. >> >> To me, Technical Diving implies simply, the use of technology to enhance >> the diving experience. Just that! That's a hard decision to justify, IMO. After all, we are using 'technology to enhance the diving experience' whenever we strap on a tank. Failing that, the use of a dive computer might be seen as dive become a technical dive (although I understand that there are some d/c's designed for use with mixed gas diving). (source: Maria) >I would certainly say that very deep diving is one form of technical >diving. My definition is that technical diving is diving beyond the >scope of recreational diving (i.e. beyond the limits or with equipment >beyond that used for recreational diving). Some examples include diving >deeper than 130 feet, decompression diving, diving with non-air mixtures, >using rebreathers, just to name a few. 'Beyond the scope of rec diving' seems a fair bit closer. Supposing that a given was part of a dive (ie. sediment sampling). Would that be a scientific dive (collection of samples) or would it be a technical dive (using skills not normally practiced by the rec diver - management of extra equipment, use of same, retrieval of same). Or both? I guess it isn't hard to tell where my interests lie 8-) Just thought I'd add my two cents' worth. Cheers!
