I have been notified, in my capacity as Public Relations Chairman of the National Association for Cave Diving, that discussions on this and other forums referring to Jackson County law enforcement officials in a negative manner (ie -- as oppressive) are hampering communications and progress in negotiating a settlement of the legal questions about cave diving in Jackson Blue and other local caves. The Sherrif has stated that his intentions (and the county's) are good ones: to prevent openwater divers from drowning in the caves, and to insure access by cave divers. While there are still questions regarding the legality of recent decisions, and ground access to the site is possible by going through the local authorities, our handling of ourselves and our language will have an effect on what happens next. This is a free country -- dissent and the ability to express our opinions, any way we want except violently, are allowed. We still have the right to question authority and ask for an examination of and the enforcement of our legal rights. However, inflammatory language never helps. Christopher A.
