Hi, This is a query which is probably only of interest to UK divers - apologies to anyone it doesn't concern. Background ~~~~~~~~ The BSAC has just approved the use of Nitrox by it's members. There are two grades: BSAC Nitrox Diver: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Entry level BSAC Sports Diver + 20 dives + a basic Nitrox qualification (eg IANTD Nitox Diver). This level permits only the use of the two standard Nitrox mixes. BSAC Advanced Nitrox Diver: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Entry Level BSAC Advanced Diver + one of IANTD Tech Nitrox, TDI Extended Range, ANDI Technical Safeair. Any mix you like, include 40% or 50% for deco. The problem we have in my Club is this: Several people have done the IANTD Advanced Nitrox, which allows you to use any mix up to 40% for bottom mix, and up to 50% for deco. Several people, including myself, carry a 7l bottle of 50% to decompress off. With the BSAC's pronouncements, we can, in theory, no longer do this unless we go off and do a ?300 course. We could carry a 7l of 36% quite legally though .... So, my question is... "What have other BSAC clubs done to allow the members to use nitrox outside of the BSAC guidelines?" My DO is concerned at the liability aspect, reasonably so since if anything went wrong it would all come down on his head. There seems to be several options: 1. Ban anyone from diving outside the guidelines at all 2. Turn a blind eye and hope nothing goes wrong 3. Some sort of arrangement that lets people dive outside the BSAC guidelines on Club dives. Any hints on how to deal with this problem greatly appreciated. Iain Robertson Watford Underwater Club BSAC 660 robertsoni@ol*.ag*.bt*.co*.uk*
