My opinion is this: Pony's don't usually carry much volume -- 13-30 cu. ft. is typical. If a diver plans the pony for use during deco and the pony fails in some way, then there probably won't be enough gas left in the main cylinder to carry the diver. I think the best use of a pony in the scenario you describe is for emergency purposes only. Decompression diving is no different than any other type of overhead environment, i.e. if you can't make a direct, continous ascent to the surface then at least one level of redundancy is required on all critical components.
