We are talking the entry level nitrox that the recreational agencies are teaching? If so, based on diving philosophy as it stands now, OW training should be integral so an instructor can evaluate how the person is actually planning the dive. Many divers are taking nitrox right out of OW, so Mickey's comment may have been valid in 1993 when nitrox was considered voodoo gas, but not today. A student needs to see real world dive planning as well as what they do in the classroom. Also, as was mentioned they need to see the different analyzers and how they are used. My gut feeling is that w/o and instructor present in their initial exposure to breathing nitrox a student will resort to computer dive planning (my computer has not beeped so I must be OK) Now, a technical diving aspirant needs more classroom time, and that's why the SCUBA agencies created classes like Tech nitrox, Advanced Nitrox, Deco Techniques etc. That should also require OW dives as the skill set required is more complex.
