You do have a point. I have gotten after some of these people for their rigid
parochialism but the basic message is correct. I have been at this sport
since the 60s, the equipment has gotten much better but the divers and training
has not. Generally speaking, the average diver is over equipped, under trained
and under experienced. We have people here in South Florida, diving who can't
even swim and they want to take a " tech " course after 10 dives ! DIR/GUE is
attempting to correct this in their own way. Don't throw the baby out with the
bath water. Glean what you can use from these threads and bypass the rest.
This latest issue with rebreathers has been going on for a while. As one of the
most accomplished rebreather divers around, George Irvine is right when he
cautions to stay the hell away from them unless you have a specific need. They
are dangerous and will kill you quickly, particularly the electronic ones.
People who deny this and claim they are business as usual are idiots in my mind
and
deserve the abuse. I learned long ago in flying and diving, you cannot
protect people from themselves. No matter how loud you scream, they are going
to do
what they are going to do!
Regards,
John Schachleiter
