JT:

Exactly what consitutes technical diving is open for debate. I don't have
any plans to do 400' dives any time soon, if ever, but some would say the
dives I've done are technical dives. In any case, I'm not a good example,
since I don't do big dives by most people's definition of that. (I do dives
in the 200' range, maybe a little deeper, with run times of 60-90 minutes
max, using at most two deco gases.)

I do have friends I dive with who do more than I do. The dives I do with
them, and the ones they do without me that might be a bigger dive, are ones
you don't hear about because there is nothing remarkable about them. They
are not death-defying, they are not record setting, they are just fun dives.
The only thing to be said about them afterward is that it was a great dive, a
lot of fun, and a good way to spend time with friends who share the same
passion for diving.

The only reason you might hear of me is that I'm a recreational instructor, I
occasionally post on some of the lists when I have something to say or can
answer someone's question, and I've even traded a couple of emails with you
over the years.

Regarding newbie questions, people have to learn somehow. You can chuckle
about the questions being unnecessary, maybe even silly, but sometimes it
takes time to gain that perspective. I still believe the only dumb question
is the one that remains unasked.

This list and the others out there, are a way to share information, have
questions answered, and to help pass along ideas that can make us all safer
while we have fun underwater. I think most of the people here appreciate
when those purposes of the list occur, and get a little tired when things
stray off-topic for too long.
