Presentation on 12-13-02 6:30PM by Chuck Zimmaro In July of last year, Chuck Zimmaro, along with famed Hollywood underwater cinematographer Al Giddings; (James Cameron's Titanic, The Abyss, The Deep, 2 James Bond movies, numerous National Geographic specials and scores of other films), traveled to the wreck of the Texas Tower 4, located nearly 80 miles offshore. Al had heard of the Tower and it's tragic fate and wanted to see for himself this once huge US Air Force radar station. Giddings would film the underwater wreck site as part of an upcoming 90 minute cable channel Special Presentation on the Texas Tower. Chuck has been diving the Tower for over 27 years and was asked by Al to act as his guide on the wreck. Also on board the dive vessel were two sons of men who were lost on the Tower when it collapsed on January 15th, 1961. It was the first time they have been to the site since it's collapse 40 years earlier and it proved to be a very emotional voyage for them. If you attend this presentation you're in for a treat. Prior to the Giddings video, Chuck will show a short 8-minute video featuring home movie footage of the Tower during a storm that was filmed by one of the crewmen who later died on the Tower! This short video will also show you the Tower from a NOAA research submersible and take you on a dive into the Tower wreckage, as it appeared prior to it's further collapse during the winter of 1999/2000, and the placing of a memorial plaque on it in July of 1999. Chuck will then show the finished cable channel video in its entirety (68 minutes without the commercials). You will get to see the show before it airs on TV! After which he will be happy to answer some of your questions. If you've never dove the Tower before this is a perfect opportunity to see the site as few have seen it before. If you have been lucky enough to dive it this will give you an entirely new perspective on one of the most unique wrecks off our coast. It's a story born in the Cold War. A story of an engineering marvel and the struggle for survival during horrific north Atlantic storms. It's the story of the attempts to rescue those men onboard and the tragic loss of life during a military mission to protect our shores ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------- Chuck Zimmaro started diving in 1966. He has spent over 30 years diving the shipwrecks off of New York, New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina coasts. He was designated mission specialist for submersible operations on two NOAA funded submersible expeditions to the wreck of Texas Tower #4. His articles, drawings and photographs have appeared in various diving magazines and books both in the United States and in Italy. _______________________________________________________________ Need New or Used Scuba Gear?
