Disorientation tied to death of diver in Lake George =20
=20
9/3/2002
HAGUE (AP) - Rescuers recovered the body of a scuba diver Monday =
who drowned while practicing deep water diving with his partner on Lake =
George.=20
Timothy Larvia, 26, was practicing Sunday in an area of the lake =
known as Anthony's Nose when he began having trouble ascending with his =
partner, Robert Crowley, 31, state police said. The experienced divers =
reached depths of about 150 feet.=20
Police believe Larvia was experiencing nitrogen narcosis - an =
impairment of a person's mental processes that can occur when divers go =
below 100 feet.=20
Crowley tried to lead Larvia to shore, but Larvia fought him and =
tried to swim deeper while mistakenly deflating his buoyancy vest, said =
Lt. David Dennin.=20
Larvia continued to resist Crowley's help and used up tremendous =
amounts of air. Crowley, starting to feel nitrogen narcosis himself, =
dropped his weights, grabbed Larvia's vest and inflated his own buoyancy =
vest, police said.=20
The two shot up quickly but Crowley lost his grip on Larvia before =
reaching the surface, police said.=20
