From: Steve Mercer <mercer@fr*.ma*.go*.nz*> Subject: Cyclon 300 regs I have serviced these regs since 1979. We used them exclusively until the Odin appeared. I recently sold our old ones off for $50 each (Greg Ryan bought 4). And I've been really happy with them (thanks Steve). They took a bit of loosening up, but now they're fine. It also took me a few dives to get used to the way they breathe. They are simple to service BUT, your dive shop has to have the special tools AND metric spanners. The first stage is unbalanced but, with this type of diaphragm reg, inhalation effort decreases with the tank pressure. The Cyclon 300 consistantly outperformed all of it's contemporaries and because it didn't change at all during it's production life, it's reported to be the most popular reg in the world (on sales figures). I notice too that Poseidon are now making the Cyclon 2nd stage in bright yellow plastic, so I presume that parts will continue to be available. I also heard rumours that they were going to issue a limited edition gold plated version as part of some sort of anniversary (for those of you with more money than sense!). Yes, we did have frequent free flows caused by the second stage piston seizing in it's housing. Both are chrome plated brass and the clearance is too small IF corrosion occurs. Usually this happens when a diver is getting back into diving after a few weeks or months break. The reg free flows as the purge button is depressed. This is cured by turning off the valve and dunking the second stage in water to dissolve away the salt. I've never known of a 300 to free flow during a dive. I've certainly never had this problem. In fact until I worked on them a little I found that they tended to stick off a bit and require a good suck to get them moving. This is no longer a problem. Greg Ryan gregr@cs*.su*.oz*.au*
