I dove with him a bunch, his captains who were squared away as well, and I helped him with some students, and with some situations where he needed the "secret weapon" as he called it. He did not suffer from any delusions about CCRs or any of the other crap we hear from those who are taking his name in vain. The guy ran a good trip. Too bad the NE morons can not learn from him. I have to correct you on the "get in the face" part. I did see him get in the face of one guy - the Seeker captain, and it needed to be done. I also saw him tell people they were not going to dive stroke rigs on his boat, like independent doubles and other nonsense. -----Original Message----- From: Doug Chapman [mailto:dougch@ea*.ne*] Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 1:16 PM To: techdiver@aquanaut.com Subject: RE: Survey of NE DiveBoats re: GUE acceptance. >I can speak somewhat to the issue of Billy Deans, he truly was one of the >nicest most honest, conscienscous guys in the business...... <snip> I will certainly 2nd that statement... and he didn't feel compelled to beat up divers to get his points across. He didn't need to because his arguments were well thought out, non-paranoid or combative, reasonable, and appropriate in measure. It was an admirable quality for someone who at that time was essentially a respected statesman for the emerging technical diving industry. He made his dive trips fun as well as safe. I was in Key West over the July 4th and holiday weekend this year, and I miss having a serious competent dive operator in that area. Out of curiosity, I inquired in various shops about trips to the deep wrecks and was met with the typical responses (a translation would be they were clueless and defensive of their egos - but they all offered 1/2 day SCUBA classes/experiences as evidence of their view on diver safety). -Doug ------=_NextPart_000_000F_01C231C1.703C89E0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.50.4728.2300" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><SPAN class=3D387513000-23072002><FONT face=3DArial color=3D#0000ff = size=3D2>Billy=20 had some stroke things going on, like the bondage wings ( he was an OMS = dealer),=20 but what a good guy to dive with.
