Only if the thing you wrap the line around is 'tall', and the
'in' end and the 'out' end stay separated.  Otherwise it is
very difficult to tell, especially by feel when wearing gloves.

Except that in a silt-out, or other emergency, when you most
need the guideline to tell you the way out, you probably won't
be unwrapping it -- just following it as quickly as possible.

For anyone who has not tried a lights out line following drill,
give it a shot, even if it's only on land.  It was especially
interesting for me when we did it as a group, eyes closed, and
had our 'exit' timed by the instructor (who had also tied a
couple of extra lines in to ours while we weren't looking, to
make things even more interesting).  I learned a lot that day.
