Subject: Michael Kane's Dreamchaser on A&E: Thoughts!

Hello everybody;

This is in regards to the A&E Documentary "Dreamchasers: Cave Diving -
an Underwater Maze" that was aired this evening and portraits one of our
well known divers Michael Kane.

Here are some thoughts about the documentary:

First: I liked it, it is a nice portrait of our beloved, HUMBLE! Mr.
Showtime, aka Hollywood Accountant, aka [fill in].

Second: It shows very interestingly how a balanced rig works and what
happens when you are disrupting it. I am referring here to the
requirement of taking his backmounted tanks off the back and
sidemounting them. I am not sure if that is really necessary, but then
considered the errr... not so low profile (Mike is a tall guy!), with
tanks that are certainly too high in profile on his body. But other
divers with ... less volume ;-) may easily be able to pass through some
of the narrower restrictions.

I don't know, asking the experts (the real experts who are doing the
dives), since I am not a caver: What are you doing when you are hitting
some really narrow restrictions?

Third: When Mike explained about the differences about the philosophies
of the divers, Buddy Quattlebaum was obviously not so open regarding the
"rigidity" of the GUE system, called the idea that the same system
should be used in all situations and the buddies should be equiped the
same way "insane" and that they (at Quattlebaums location) are using
100's of different gear configurations down here, and almost in the same
breath, mentions that "down here (at Quattlebaums location)" not
everyone comes back alive.

I thought by myself: "DUH!"

Lastly, JJ, please be easy on Mike, I am sure the AGA mask was just an
accident... he is doing otherwise a good job... ;-)

Just some observations...

Udo
