HJ>I seriously question whether the direction of line wraps is effective for
HJ>finding ones way out of a wreck, especially if one were wearing gloves.

It makes sense what you say here, but if you think on it
a bit when you wrap the line around something it should
be _relatively_ obvious which way you wrapped it originally.

____________ ---> In to the wreck
                             (_______

                                | |

The last loop you laid will be on the end of the object
you wrapped. While you were unwrapping the line it should be
plain if you are not proceeding in the right direction, your
line will only unwrap easily one way.

HJ>In cave diving, one is trained to make as few line wraps as possible since

In wrecks it's been my observation that there are too many turns
around sharp metal to not leave adequate wraps. Also it is not
uncommon for a stretch of line to work it's way underneath an
object.
