A nice, scholarly treatise, thank you, I'll tuck it away.

Errmmm, and your point is?

Perhaps that manufacturers should seek better tolerances in O Ring
grooves? Forgive me if I'm wrong in this.

If not, why then MY point is that:

1) O Rings are cheap;
2) Servicing, when compared to your expectancy of continued life, is
REALLY cheap;
3) You don't do (1) and (2) above, why, you're either pretty stupid or
have a death wish,
4) O Ring groove tolerances have served us well, by and large, for
more years than I care to remember, and
5) Except for those stupid A Clamp O Rings, aka the open face (non
DIN) ones on tank taps as those mostly  tolerated in the US (but also
elsewhere) ... except listmembers, but of course.
