David,
There are two reasons to wash the thinsulate underwaer:1) it has
achieved that funky locker room smell to the point no one wants to dive with
you, 2)the thinsulate has absorbed dirt and/or body oils and has lost some
of it's capacity to insulate. The first scenario is more common and easier
to fix. Just wash it in a front loading washer with a little chlorine
bleach. DUI will warn you that bleach will discolor the thinsulate, it will-
big deal. Cycle through the washer once more with no bleach. For dirt and
oils you need to wash with a detergent then run through 2-3 more cycles
without detergent to get the hydrophobic properties back. You can extend the
time between washings by layering something between you and the thinsulate
for relatively warm/short dives. Anytime you're on a dive where a leaky or
flooded drysuit would be a critical issue you want only the thinsulate
against your skin- no layering. Between dives, store the suit inside out on
a hanger. When you put it on, be careful not to let the thinsulate bunch
around your wrists and ankles. This isn't good for fit or insulation and it
restricts movement.
C.
