Thanks to everyone that responded.  I talked to Jeff Christiansen of the
Seattle Aquarium.  As most of the responses I have been getting, he has
confirmed the identity as an Immature Gumboot Chiton (Cryptochiton
stelleri).

Udo -

I think what you're describing sounds like a limpet.  A mollusk with a
segmented, hinged shell on it's upper half and a ventral side designed
for holding on to rocks through wave and tidal action.

This puppy looks completely different and has no shell.. very cool!!

Mussels are bi-valve mollusks and something else all together.

Please let me know what you guys find out!!
