I know at the time Tysall and Zee did the dive, there was another diver who 
was hoping to be the first to dive the Fitz on open circuit scuba.  I hear he 
was disappointed to have been beaten to the punch.

Besides depth, there was also the darkness and temperature of the water with 
which to contend.  The in-water decompression in 32-40 degree water for a 
dive to that depth was a major consideration, especially when there was less 
known or practiced about deep stops and other techniques that might have 
helped to make the deco less arduous.
